Therapy for Moving Forward

I offer a number of different therapy services whether you are looking for in person or online therapy or a hybrid of both, or perhaps you are a therapist looking for supervision.

Sometimes it can be difficult know what type of therapy is best for you, there is so much choice. What do we mean by psychodynamic or humanistic? How does trauma therapy work? Are we just going to talk or are we going to work in other ways too? And how ever we work, will it help me?

So I hope I can clarify a little more here. Firstly, my diploma in counselling and psychotherapy, equipped me to work with different therapeutic models which I combine to create a holistic approach. This also means that if anything is getting stuck in therapy, we can switch to another way of working to help you move forwards. For a summary of these models please see integrative therapy.

Secondly, I am trained in specific evidence-based trauma therapies including EFT, Matrix Reimprinting and IFS which, and depending on your needs, I integrate into my overall approach. I also offer EFT and Matrix Reimprinting as standalone therapies too.

There are many approaches to therapy but it’s the relationship itself that offers the safe container for change.

What is the Difference Between Counselling and Psychotherapy?

There is actually little distinction between counselling and psychotherapy, although training to become a psychotherapist and to be able to use this professional title requires a specific training, often over four years.

Generally speaking, the term ‘counselling’ tends to be used for problem focused work over a short-term period. ‘Psychotherapy’ tends to be used when the emphasis is placed on deeper, psychological issues and on a person’s inner world, and may last a number of years.

Initially, you might enter therapy to deal with a specific problem but continue your explorations over a longer period in order to deepen your understanding of yourself.

What Else Can I Expect from Therapy?

Therapy takes place in a comfortable and secure setting. You can use your sessions however you wish, whatever you want to explore and work on – this is your therapy hour, and it is my role to act as a supportive and compassionate guide.

At appropriate moments I may …

  • Reflect your story or experience back to you.
  • Validate your thoughts and feelings.
  • Help reframe and offer a different perspective.
  • Make connections between different parts of your story.
  • Gently encourage deeper exploration of your issues.
  • Draw attention to the way you relate to yourself and others.
  • Suggest creative ways of working with your material.
  • Help regulate your nervous system with somatic therapies, like EFT.
  • Resource you with psychoeducation and tools.
  • Suggest ‘homework’ and exercises to do between sessions for example keeping an insight journal or dream diary.

Therapy isn’t …

  • Something that is ‘forced’ upon you – You don’t have to talk about /explore anything you don’t feel comfortable with. You stay in charge of your process.
  • About giving advice – Instead, I will support you in finding your own answers.
  • ‘A friendship’ – A friendship implies a ‘reciprocal’ support system. Instead, the boundary of the therapy relationship is ‘one way’ care for the client. It is my role to emotionally hold and support you and not visa-versa.
  • A quick fix – Counselling and psychotherapy don’t always offer an instant solution to our problems. The process of therapy can take time. However, with courage and a willingness to change on your part it can bring about profound transformation. Therapy might not be able to erase all our hurts, but it can allow us to live with greater peace, acceptance and self-awareness.
